Petco Park Parking vs Transit

If your downtown hotel is genuinely walkable for your group, start there. Otherwise compare the complete Trolley trip with a reserved lot. The right answer includes getting home, not just reaching Petco Park.

START WITH YOUR TRIP

Walk, ride or drive?

Staying downtown

Favor walking when the actual route, distance and access needs work for your group. Keeping the car at the hotel can remove a second parking charge and a postgame garage exit.

Starting farther out

Compare a suitable Park & Ride station with driving all the way. Count the drive to the station, wait, transfers, final walk and return service before calling it easier.

Need the vehicle

Driving may fit luggage, onward travel or a trip that reaches beyond transit. Choose the lot, read its conditions and confirm any assistance before buying the pass.

If you are staying downtown

Walking or a short Trolley trip can remove the parking problem entirely. Check the route from your actual hotel entrance to the gate you intend to use, then repeat that check for the return. “Downtown” alone is too broad to settle the choice.

MTS lists Gaslamp Quarter and 12th & Imperial about one block from Petco, and Park & Market about 0.2 miles away. These station distances are not hotel walking times or a guarantee of an accessible route.

If you are coming from outside downtown

Use the Green Line toward Gaslamp Quarter, or the Blue/Orange Line toward 12th & Imperial or Park & Market, following MTS’s Petco guidance. Run the MTS trip planner for your origin and expected departure, then check alerts and detours.

COASTER riders can connect to the Green Line at Old Town or Santa Fe Depot. For ticketing, load your fare before travel and tap or scan at the validator for every ride; each traveler needs their own payment method. Read MTS’s Padres travel instructions. Confirm your specific fare product and any onward connection.

For Park & Ride, choose a station that fits your approach to the city. Read the current station-parking rules before driving there. MTS limits Trolley-station parking to 24 hours; some listed parking is paid, and a listed lot does not mean a space is available. Do not use a transit lot as an unchecked multi-night hotel-parking plan.

Set a return deadline before the game. If the last workable connection would require leaving early, decide whether you can accept that or need a different mode. Extra game-day service is not a promise that every onward connection runs late.

If you drive

Pick the event and the lot together. Start with the Padres’ downtown parking map and official parking page. Navigate to the entrance specified for your pass, not simply to Petco Park.

  • Read the lot’s opening time, vehicle limits, entry instructions and cancellation terms for your purchase. Avoid carrying forward a concert parking rule to a Padres game.
  • Compare the whole cost: event parking plus any hotel parking already being paid. Include the walk and likely exit queue in your decision without inventing a fixed delay.
  • If you need to leave immediately afterward, check the exit route and your next destination in advance. The closest stall is not automatically the easiest onward trip.

Tailgating is restricted to Tailgate Park, behind your vehicle, under the operator’s rules. Check the current tailgating conditions. If that is part of the trip, it changes the mode decision; an arbitrary downtown garage does not substitute.

Rideshare, bikes and assistance

For a car pickup, confirm the current designated area in the Padres’ A–Z guide and follow event-day staff instructions. Agree on a pickup plan with your group before the crowd leaves. A rideshare avoids storing a car but still depends on road access and demand.

If cycling fits your trip, check the Padres’ bicycle-parking locations rather than assuming you can bring the bike through the gate.

If you need accessible parking or a shuttle, confirm the complete arrival and return with Padres Guest Services before you travel. Official shuttle instructions still conflict, so this page intentionally does not publish a dispatch number or promise a pickup point. Use the accessibility guide to arrange the assistance you need.

Before you leave

Sources checked October 5, 2026. Check the actual event, your return service, the current lot or pickup instructions and any requested assistance. Bus detours, rail works and event arrangements can change the final leg; don’t use a past game’s schedule as today’s plan.
