Where to Stay for a San Diego Sports Trip

Choose the base from the games you are attending, not from a generic hotel ranking. San Diego’s sports trip splits between Petco Park in Downtown/East Village and Snapdragon Stadium in Mission Valley.

The game sets the geography

Petco first? Start with Downtown/East Village. Snapdragon first? Compare Mission Valley and a real Green Line connection. Both venues? Weigh the two event-day trips together. The cheapest room can still give you the wrong weekend.

Downtown / East Village

This is the strongest default when Petco Park is central to the trip or when you want the sports weekend tied closely to the downtown visitor core. Petco can be reached on foot from parts of the area or through nearby Trolley stations, and the Green Line preserves a direct chain toward Stadium Station for Snapdragon events.

Check the specific address and route to Petco rather than treating every downtown hotel as an equally easy walk. If Snapdragon is also on the itinerary, check the Green Line station you would actually use.

Mission Valley

Mission Valley deserves comparison when Snapdragon is the primary event and you value a shorter venue-side trip over downtown proximity. The Green Line is the key connection to Stadium Station and back toward Old Town and downtown.

Do not equate a Mission Valley address with walking access to the stadium or a station. Verify the property-to-station leg, including the return after the event.

Old Town / Green Line connection

Old Town can be useful for travelers who value the airport shuttle connection, Green Line access and regional rail connections. It is a transportation-oriented base choice, not an automatic recommendation for every sports trip.

Useful transport links still have to suit the rest of your plans. Check the exact hotel address and what your journey looks like with luggage.

Do not choose the hotel first

Exact hotel inventory, rates, parking and amenities change by date. Choose the zone first, then verify individual properties directly for the trip dates.

  • Door to venue: actual station or walking route, return service and your group’s access needs.
  • Whole-stay cost: room total, required fees, parking and transportation for each event.
  • Flight and bags: airport connection, check-in timing and whether the property can store your luggage.
  • Flexibility: cancellation deadline and any restrictions before you book.

Check the journey before the room

Use the official transport guidance to test your shortlist. A neighborhood recommendation is not a property recommendation or a promise of inventory.
