READ THE REGION BEFORE THE TIMETABLE

New York / New Jersey Sports Venue Geography & Transit Planner

Find your venue and network

One weekend can take you from a Manhattan arena to a Bronx ballpark, out to Elmont or across the Hudson. The useful map is the one that explains where you change networks, not just where a stadium pin sits.

The call: Choose the venue node first, then the network that reaches it from your base. Check the return chain separately.

Seven areas, nine sports destinations

Regional relationship schematic. Read the river boundaries and separate network branches before choosing a base. Shapes and spacing are conceptual, not to scale; rows inside an area are a reading order, not a street route. Intermediate stops are omitted.

Read the regional relationships and connections in words

Bronx / Yankee Stadium

Across the Harlem River from Manhattan island.

Subway to 161 St–Yankee Stadium and Metro-North Hudson Line to Yankees–E 153rd Street are different arrival stations.

What changes: Choose the station that fits your actual origin; check the event and return separately.

Meadowlands / East Rutherford / MetLife Stadium

In New Jersey, west of the Hudson River; a separate branch from Newark/Harrison.

Where scheduled for your event, NJ TRANSIT Meadowlands rail service connects through Secaucus Junction.

What changes: MetLife event rail uses NJ TRANSIT via Secaucus, not PATH. Confirm that your exact event has the service you plan to use.

Newark / Harrison / Prudential Center + Sports Illustrated Stadium

In New Jersey, west of the Hudson. The Passaic River separates Newark and Harrison.

Newark Penn serves the Prudential Center trip; Harrison PATH station serves the Harrison stadium trip. Newark Broad Street is a different rail station.

What changes: Do not treat the two venues or Newark’s rail stations as interchangeable.

Hudson River

Manhattan ↔ New Jersey. The destination determines the crossing and operator.

Manhattan / Madison Square Garden

Across the Hudson from New Jersey; across the East River from Queens/Brooklyn.

MSG is at Penn Station. Penn, Grand Central and PATH’s World Trade Center station are different destinations, not one interchange.

What changes: Keep the actual terminal in your hotel and transfer plan.

East River

Manhattan ↔ Queens / Brooklyn. Keep the eastern branches distinct.

Queens / Citi Field + US Open tennis grounds

Across the East River from Manhattan; the Willets Point sports destinations are in Queens.

The 7 subway and LIRR Port Washington Branch both serve Mets–Willets Point. The stations and accessibility arrangements differ.

What changes: Port Washington trains do not use Jamaica. Do not reuse a Jamaica transfer plan for Willets Point.

Elmont / UBS Arena

In Nassau County, east of the Queens boundary.

Use the LIRR Elmont–UBS Arena station, then the separately checked station-to-arena connection.

What changes: Check the train’s actual stop pattern and the event’s last-mile/return instructions.

Brooklyn / Barclays Center

Across the East River from Manhattan.

Atlantic Av–Barclays Ctr subway station serves the arena; LIRR Atlantic Terminal is across the street.

What changes: Atlantic Terminal is a Brooklyn rail destination. Check the actual LIRR service and any Jamaica connection.

Regional connections in words

  • Hudson River: Manhattan / New Jersey. Choose NJ TRANSIT or PATH by the actual destination; the Meadowlands and Newark/Harrison branches differ.
  • East River: Manhattan / Queens/Brooklyn. Willets Point and Atlantic Terminal are different east-side branches; select the appropriate train/network.
  • Harlem River: Manhattan / Bronx. Yankee Stadium’s subway and Metro-North arrivals are distinct.
  • Passaic River: Newark / Harrison. Prudential Center and Sports Illustrated Stadium are on different venue/station chains.

Subway and LIRR can serve the same named destination through different stations or platforms. Metro-North’s Yankee Stadium stop is on its Hudson Line. NJ TRANSIT’s event branch through Secaucus is separate from PATH’s Newark/Harrison corridor. An airport link is another leg of the journey, not a venue-arrival plan.

Bring the airport into the same picture

JFK

Terminal → AirTrain → Jamaica for LIRR/subway connections, or Howard Beach for a subway connection → exact base → venue.

Choose the interchange for the complete journey. Willets Point’s LIRR branch does not run via Jamaica.

Check JFK transfers

LaGuardia

Terminal → airport bus → subway/LIRR connection → exact base → venue.

LaGuardia requires a bus link for these rail journeys. Match the bus and interchange to your destination.

Check LaGuardia transfers

Newark Liberty

Terminal connection → AirTrain → Newark Liberty International Airport rail station → NJ TRANSIT rail → exact base → venue.

The airport rail station is not Newark Penn. Terminal A has an additional terminal connection; check the airport’s current directions and advisories.

Use the regional picture, then check your operator

Start with the MTA geographic subway map (PDF) for NYC subway geography. It is a reference, not a complete regional railway or event-service plan.

Use the MTA venue guide for the branch, station and return trip that actually belongs to your event: Yankee Stadium · Citi Field · UBS Arena.

For the Meadowlands, check NJ TRANSIT’s event-service page. For Newark and Harrison, check PATH’s current planner. A familiar destination name is not proof that the service you remember runs that night.

The transfers that change the trip

Penn, Grand Central and Atlantic Terminal

Penn Station in Manhattan, Grand Central in Manhattan and Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn are distinct rail destinations. Check which terminal your train uses before choosing a nearby hotel or promising yourself an easy transfer.

Port Washington is not a Jamaica branch

For Citi Field and the tennis grounds, the LIRR Port Washington Branch serves Mets–Willets Point. Do not plan a Jamaica interchange for that branch. The subway is a separate choice, with different access arrangements.

Secaucus is the event-service decision

For a rail trip to MetLife, first establish that your event has Meadowlands service. Then check both the connection at Secaucus and the last useful way back. The existence of a station does not guarantee a train for every event.

Newark Penn is not Harrison

Prudential Center’s Newark trip and Sports Illustrated Stadium’s Harrison trip have different final stations. Newark Broad Street is another distinct arrival. Keep the named station and the last leg together.

Build one complete chain

  1. Write the actual hotel entrance → first station or pickup → interchange → venue station or lot → event entrance.
  2. Write the way back independently. Include the last useful connection and a fallback you can actually use.
  3. If you need step-free travel, inspect every interchange and current elevator status. Check the MTA’s separate Mets–Willets Point subway and LIRR accessibility guidance before choosing either.
  4. Check the exact game or performance venue. Do not infer a soccer venue from the team’s name or an old fixture.

Give the pregame back to the game. Once the return is solved, you can spend that attention on the ballpark, the arena or the tennis, instead of trying to rescue a connection after the final whistle.

Two rivers, two common mistakes

The Hudson separates Manhattan from the New Jersey branches. Crossing it twice to save a little on a room can be a poor trade if the second crossing comes after a late event. That is a trip-planning judgment, not a blanket verdict on New Jersey hotels.

The Passaic separates Newark from Harrison. A stadium visible near Newark is not the same thing as an arena beside Newark Penn. Keep those arrivals distinct.

The schematic and its text equivalent explain selected regional relationships and transfers. They make no promise about walking clearance, live service, fare integration or travel time. Use the current operator notices for those details.
