Indy 500 2027: make the whole weekend count
Bring your driver's colors. Bring someone who’s always wanted to go. Give the weekend enough room to become more than a race ticket.
The 111th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for May 30. Start with the days you want to attend, then match your admission, Indianapolis base and return journey. You can make those big decisions now while keeping the race-day details open for confirmation.
2027 planning note
Race-weekend dates checked October 5, 2026. Detailed gate times, transport arrangements and some access information are not yet verified here for 2027. Several official planning pages still show previous-edition details. Check the year beside the instruction, not just the logo at the top.
Choose your weekend
The race is the anchor. Decide how much of the buildup belongs in your trip.
Friday, May 28
Carb Day
The official program describes final practice and the Pit Stop Competition alongside entertainment. If that buildup is part of the appeal, include Friday in the plan and check the day's admission and any concert-area requirements separately.
Saturday, May 29
Legends Day
IMS’s 2027 outline includes driver and veteran autograph sessions plus the public drivers’ meeting. Check the details and access for anything you especially want to see. Leave some space to prepare for Sunday rather than scheduling every available hour.
Sunday, May 30
Indianapolis 500
Build the day around your actual viewing area and a workable journey home. A ticket for another May event does not settle race admission, parking or transport.
Know a little of what you’re walking into
The winning driver’s milk, the faces on the Borg-Warner Trophy and “Back Home Again in Indiana” connect this race with the people who keep returning to it. IMS traces the milk celebration to Louis Meyer’s 1936 victory; the trophy’s sculpted faces make the winners part of the object itself.
You don’t need to know every name to enjoy the occasion. Learn a little of the ritual, leave room for the buildup and let the place give you a reason to return.

Choose your view, then check the full path to it
Start with how you want to spend the day. Reserved seating gives you an assigned place in the grandstands; general admission offers viewing from the infield mounds. Compare the actual area, steps, walking or rolling requirements and comfort needs before deciding. Neither label by itself promises shade or a view of the whole circuit.
If access requirements will determine your ticket, settle them first with IMS. Check the whole chain from your arrival point to the gate, seat and return. IMS’s current guidance says its assistance carts stay inside the gates, so an exterior parking-lot transfer needs its own answer. Confirm the arrangement for your 2027 visit.
Pick a base for the weekend you actually want
Downtown
Downtown can make sense if restaurants, another city activity or time together away from the circuit are a large part of your visit. Treat the trip to Speedway as a separate leg with an outward and return plan.
Speedway-oriented
A Speedway-oriented base is worth comparing if you expect repeated IMS days and the race is the center of the trip. Check the actual address against your permitted entrance and transport plan. A nearby listing does not prove a convenient route to your seat.
Choose between those trip shapes before comparing individual rooms. Keep the cancellation terms and your travel flexibility in view while event details develop.
Solve the return before race morning
Your plan needs five connected parts: base, transport, arrival point, gate and seat. Then it needs the same care in reverse.
Driving requires the correct day and lot instructions. A shuttle needs a confirmed 2027 service, boarding point, pass and return arrangement. Rideshare still needs an official pickup plan and a workable walk to it. Check access requirements across every step rather than assuming one accessible element covers the whole journey.
Leave flexibility after the race. The current IMS directions warn of controlled departures and vehicle holds, but their dated instructions are not a verified 2027 traffic plan. Don’t build a tight onward connection around an assumed finish or exit time.
The few checks that make the day easier
- Prepare the actual credentials. If you choose digital delivery, IMS supports mobile-wallet access. Complete transfers and check who holds each ticket and parking pass before leaving.
- Pack for your ticketed area. Recheck the current rules for bags, coolers, chairs and any concert or credentialed area. The permitted-items rules can differ by area and change.
- Plan for noise, sun and time on your feet, and agree where your group will reunite. Ask about specific assistance needs in advance.
- Reconfirm the 2027 schedule, your admission and the complete return journey before the weekend. If an official page still displays an older edition, use the Ticket Office to resolve a consequential uncertainty.
Make room for the occasion
Choose the day you’ll remember, then take care of the trip around it. Once the admission, base and return are settled, you can give the racing and the company your attention.
