SAN DIEGO · AIRPORT TO GAME DAY

San Diego Airport for a Sports Trip

Solve the arrival in this order: airport → base → venue. San Diego International Airport is close to the central city, but the best ground-transport chain changes depending on whether your trip is centered on Petco Park downtown, Snapdragon Stadium in Mission Valley, or both.

One airport. Two useful transit chains.

The Trolley does not stop at SAN’s terminals. Decide where you are sleeping, then compare the bus or shuttle connection and the last leg to the hotel. A good airport plan should still work with bags and a delayed flight.

Downtown or Petco Park trip

MTS Route 992 connects both airport terminals with downtown and the Santa Fe Depot area. From there, check the onward trip to your hotel. Petco Park has nearby Trolley stations, but an airport connection is not a promise of a direct ride to the ballpark door.

Mission Valley or Snapdragon Stadium trip

MTS also identifies the San Diego Flyer as a direct airport connection to Old Town. Old Town is on the Green Line, the line that serves Stadium Station at Snapdragon Stadium. That makes an airport → Old Town → Green Line chain worth comparing with rideshare or a rental car when Mission Valley is the center of the trip.

If you are attending games at both venues

Do not optimize the airport leg in isolation. Choose the hotel base first, then evaluate the airport transfer and both event-day trips together. A downtown base can simplify Petco Park while retaining Green Line access toward Mission Valley; a Mission Valley base changes that tradeoff.

When a car can still make sense

A rental car can be rational when the sports weekend is only one part of a wider regional trip, when your group has mobility or equipment needs, or when destinations outside the transit-friendly core dominate the itinerary. Flying in does not, by itself, make a rental car necessary.

Compare the total trip: airport pickup, hotel parking and a separate arrival plan for each event. If accessibility or equipment needs matter, verify the specific service and the full journey before choosing it.

Verify before you go

Airport bus and shuttle service, Trolley schedules, construction and special-event service can change. Check the official MTS airport page and current trip planner for your arrival time, then recheck event service for the game you are attending.

Early or late flight? The official summaries currently disagree on Route 992 service hours. Use the date-specific MTS schedule for the trip you need and SAN’s current terminal pickup information. Do not assume a connection is available because the flight lands within a general service window.
