Choose your Twin Cities base before you choose a hotel. For most sports trips, the useful question is whether you want to anchor the weekend in downtown Minneapolis, downtown Saint Paul, or along the transit corridor between them.
Make the base call first
Downtown Minneapolis: best when the Minneapolis venue cluster drives the trip
Start here when U.S. Bank Stadium, Target Field or Target Center is the main event. Downtown Minneapolis keeps those venue trips compact and also puts both the Blue and Green light-rail lines into the trip-planning toolkit.
Downtown Saint Paul: best when the Saint Paul night is the anchor
Choose Saint Paul when your itinerary revolves around Grand Casino Arena (formerly Xcel Energy Center) and you would rather make the Minneapolis portion the transfer than commute back after the Saint Paul event.
Green-Line-connected: best when the trip genuinely spans both cities
A corridor base can reduce the penalty of choosing one downtown over the other. The current Green Line connects downtown Minneapolis and downtown Saint Paul; exact station-to-hotel walking conditions still need to be checked for the property you book.
Use the itinerary, not the room rate, as the tiebreaker
- One Minneapolis game: bias toward downtown Minneapolis.
- One Saint Paul arena event: bias toward downtown Saint Paul.
- Events in both downtowns: compare the late-night return and transfer burden before booking.
- Allianz Field is important: treat the Midway/Green Line leg as part of the base decision rather than assuming either downtown is automatically best.
- Flying in without a car: remember that MSP Airport sits directly on the Blue Line, so airport arrival favors a simple rail connection into Minneapolis before other transfers.
