TWIN CITIES / VENUE GEOGRAPHY

Two cities. Five venues. Start with the right end of the trip.

Keep Minneapolis, Saint Paul and Allianz Field’s Midway location separate in your head. The light-rail network links them, but a train connection does not make them the same neighborhood. Pick the venue that anchors your visit, then test the hotel and the ride home.

See the geography before choosing the base

Use the regional map for the two cities, Allianz Field and MSP. Open the downtown map when your trip turns on Target Field, Target Center or U.S. Bank Stadium. The source maps provide geographic context. Start with the original connection schematic below, then use the trip board to decide what those relationships change.

The network in two lines

GDT connection schematic · selected stops only. Read the arrows as the order of the named connections, not as street directions or distances. Intermediate stops are omitted. Check both journeys for your event.

Blue Line: airport toward downtown Minneapolis

  1. MSP airport
Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 stations
  2. U.S. Bank Stadium Station
U.S. Bank Stadium; change here for an eastbound Green Line train
  3. Warehouse District/Hennepin Avenue Station
    Target Center approach
  4. Target Field Station
    Target Field approach

Green Line: downtown Minneapolis toward downtown Saint Paul

  1. Downtown Minneapolis
Target Field and Warehouse District/Hennepin Avenue stations, then U.S. Bank Stadium Station
  2. Midway, Saint Paul
Snelling Avenue Station for Allianz Field
  3. Downtown Saint Paul
Choose a station and final leg to Grand Casino Arena in the trip planner

Airport transfer: stay on the Blue Line for the Minneapolis venues. For Allianz Field or Grand Casino Arena by rail, change at U.S. Bank Stadium Station to an eastbound Green Line train. A venue approach still follows each station arrival.

Original GDT network synthesis from Metro Transit’s network and venue pages and MSP Airport’s terminal guidance, reviewed October 6, 2026. This schematic describes connections; it does not certify current service, walking paths, gates, skyway access or step-free routes. The station-by-station text below supplies the same trip relationships.

The three sports territories

  • Downtown Minneapolis: Target Field and Target Center sit toward the northwest side of downtown; U.S. Bank Stadium is farther southeast in Downtown East. The rail corridor links the ends of this territory. This is the first base to test when most of your tickets are for those three buildings.
  • Downtown Saint Paul: Grand Casino Arena, formerly Xcel Energy Center, is by West 7th Street and Kellogg Boulevard. Green Line service reaches downtown Saint Paul, then you still have a station-to-arena leg. A Wild-centered trip deserves a Saint Paul base comparison.
  • Allianz Field / Midway: Minnesota United’s stadium is in Saint Paul, between the two downtowns along the Green Line corridor. Snelling Avenue Station is the rail reference. Choose the base around your whole weekend, rather than treating “Saint Paul” as proof that the arena and soccer stadium are next door.

The station is the handoff, not the finish line

  • Target Field: Blue or Green Line to Target Field Station; then follow the ballpark’s entry guidance.
  • Target Center: Blue or Green Line to Warehouse District/Hennepin Avenue Station; continue to the arena entrance required for your ticket.
  • U.S. Bank Stadium: Blue or Green Line to U.S. Bank Stadium Station; confirm the event’s gate and security approach.
  • Allianz Field: Green Line to Snelling Avenue Station; finish the street-level approach using current stadium guidance.
  • Grand Casino Arena: Green Line into downtown Saint Paul or a suitable bus route; use the trip planner for the exact final leg. Do not assume an arena-front rail stop.

Your airport arrival has its own shape

MSP has Blue Line stations at both terminals. Downtown Minneapolis is north of the airport. To reach the Green Line from the airport by rail, Metro Transit directs Allianz Field and Grand Casino Arena travelers to transfer at U.S. Bank Stadium Station for an eastbound Green Line train.

That is a network connection, not a claim that rail is always your quickest whole-trip option. For Saint Paul, compare the live trip planner’s bus choices as well. Leave luggage at the base when possible and count terminal exit, hotel check-in and the final approach, not just train time.

Build the terminal-to-base-to-game chain

The four checks that make a connection real

  1. Choose the finish: Which venue and which entrance does this ticket require?
  2. Choose the origin: Enter the actual hotel, not just “downtown.” Include the walk or transfer to transit.
  3. Check both directions: Test the outward journey and a realistic departure after the event, including the queue to leave the building.
  4. Keep a fallback: Decide what you will do if the rail segment is replaced by buses, a skyway closes or the event runs late.

GDT call: a Minneapolis-heavy itinerary usually makes a Minneapolis base the first comparison. A Saint Paul arena-centered itinerary makes Saint Paul worth testing first. Mixed tickets need both door-to-door journeys checked; a midpoint hotel does not automatically minimize the work.

Accessibility changes the whole chain

Transit-station accessibility, an accessible venue entrance and a usable route between them are separate questions. Confirm elevators, crossings, curb access, weather exposure and the venue’s assistance limits for your own trip. A station name on this page is not a certified step-free route.

If the connection depends on a precise pickup point or assistance outside the building, confirm it with the relevant operator before committing to the transport choice.

Check the moving parts

These operator pages own event rules and live travel information. Recheck for your date before leaving; a normal rail connection does not promise service after your event.

Source review: October 6, 2026. Live fares, train times, parking availability and event opening times are deliberately left with the operator.

Your next move

Keep the hotel, game and return journey in the same plan. Your ticket gets you in; a good base makes the rest of the trip work.
