The Washington Planning Guide
Washington teams and venue planning
Start with the team and the actual event. Washington Commanders play their home football games at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. Washington Nationals baseball centers on Nationals Park by the riverfront.
For Downtown arena trips, use the separate Washington Wizards guide or Washington Capitals guide. College basketball planning is covered for Georgetown Hoyas and George Washington Revolutionaries.
The six featured cards are not an exhaustive list of Washington sports. D.C. United and Washington Spirit at Audi Field have separate matchday arrangements. Check the specific team calendar, ticket and venue notice before booking.
Washington Wizards: plan a Downtown basketball night
Use Capital One Arena as the center of your Wizards trip. A Downtown or Penn Quarter base can put dining and civic stops into the same part of the day; check the actual hotel-to-arena route rather than relying on the neighborhood name.
Confirm your Wizards date and start time through the official arena events calendar. Follow that event’s Know Before You Go notice for doors, bag rules and renovation-related entrances. A different sport’s event notice does not establish your game’s arrangements.
Choose the postgame return before adding another stop. Allow for basketball overtime, crowds and your actual last usable train or pickup plan.
Washington Capitals: plan a Downtown hockey night
Center a Capitals visit on Capital One Arena and build the rest of the day around the confirmed puck drop. A National Mall or museum visit belongs before the arena only if its timing leaves room for meals, travel and entry.
Check the official arena events calendar for the actual Capitals fixture and the event’s Know Before You Go notice for entry instructions. The sample Nationals-and-Capitals weekend is not a confirmed pairing.
Keep the return flexible for overtime and arena exit crowds; do not treat an event listing’s estimated end as a guaranteed departure time.
Georgetown Hoyas basketball planning
Georgetown men’s basketball has its primary home at Capital One Arena, as identified by the arena’s official venue information. Confirm the venue on the schedule and ticket for your selected game; this does not establish the venue for every Georgetown team or fixture.
For a Downtown arena event, match your base, entry instructions and return plan to the venue notice. The historical game photograph on this card was taken aboard USS Bataan in 2012, not at a current Washington home venue.
George Washington basketball: Foggy Bottom
George Washington’s Charles E. Smith Center is at 600 22nd Street NW in Foggy Bottom. Plan the visit around that campus location rather than treating it as the same journey as Capital One Arena.
Confirm the current game and entry information on the university’s official schedule and your ticket. Add a meal or nearby civic stop only after protecting the game window and the return to your base.
Downtown / Penn Quarter: stay near the arena
Choose Downtown or Penn Quarter when Capital One Arena is the trip’s main event and you want to combine the game with central DC dining or museums. Compare the actual hotel entrance-to-arena walk and the late return, not just the advertised neighborhood.
Before selecting a property, confirm luggage storage, accessibility needs, cancellation terms and the route to your departure airport. No hotel inventory, rate or availability is implied by this neighborhood guide.
Georgetown: neighborhood time with a separate game journey
Choose Georgetown for historic streets, M Street dining and waterfront time, then budget the separate journey to your game. A Georgetown stay is not the same decision as staying beside a Downtown arena or riverfront stadium.
Assess the actual property, hills and walking distances for your party. Compare the postgame trip back, airport connection and luggage arrangements before choosing a room; no availability or price is asserted here.
Capitol Hill: a neighborhood base for your DC visit
Capitol Hill offers a neighborhood-focused alternative to an arena-adjacent base. Use the specific property address to test your route to the event and the civic stops you want to include.
Do not assume a whole neighborhood is equally convenient for every venue. Check the station walk, late return, luggage and mobility needs against the actual game and departure plans.
Food and drink: choose the right district for your game
Use The Wharf guide for Southwest waterfront dining, Navy Yard / The Yards for riverfront stadium time, U Street for a separate music-and-nightlife stop, or Georgetown for historic streets and waterfront time.
These are neighborhood planning guides, not live restaurant reservations, ratings or opening-hours guarantees. Confirm the chosen business directly, allow time for the game and protect the journey home.
The Wharf: waterfront dining before or after your DC plans
The Wharf is a Southwest waterfront dining and gathering district. Treat it as a chosen stop with its own transfer time, rather than assuming it is outside every stadium gate.
Pick a business and confirm its current hours, menu and any reservation requirements directly. If you are heading to a game afterward, work backward from entry time; after a game, check the return to your base before staying out longer.
U Street: music, dining and a separate late-night plan
Choose U Street as a deliberate dining or nightlife stop, not an automatic extension of every game itinerary. The historical Ben’s Chili Bowl photograph identifies the area; it does not establish current hours, availability or an endorsement.
Check the chosen venue’s current operating information and the trip back to your base. A late postgame detour is worthwhile only if the return still works for your party.
Georgetown: M Street and waterfront time
Georgetown fits a lunch, shopping or neighborhood walk when you have a clear block of time away from the game. The sample Day 3 lunch is a neighborhood suggestion, not a reservation or a named restaurant recommendation.
Choose the actual business and confirm its current hours. Include the transfer back for luggage, the game or the airport; historic streets and waterfront scenery do not remove those timing constraints.
Plan your Washington sports trip
Start with the actual event, then choose a base for the hardest return. Downtown arena nights, a riverfront stadium visit and a football day in Landover are different trips—not interchangeable DC addresses.
Check the arena calendar, Nationals schedule or your team’s official schedule before booking. A sample itinerary does not establish ticket availability or an achievable multi-game pairing.
Choose a base, protect luggage and airport time, and check the return journey as carefully as arrival. This guide is planning information, not an automated booking or itinerary-generation service.
Three days: games, neighborhoods and monuments
Day 1 — the riverfront. Arrive, leave luggage at your confirmed accommodation and work backward from the actual first pitch. Give Nationals Park its own entry window. Eat around Navy Yard or the riverfront without making a restaurant stop compete with admission. Check the last usable return before going out.
Day 2 — Downtown. Choose one civic or museum block before an arena game. A timed interior visit is a separate commitment from an outdoor memorial walk. Follow the specific event’s doors, bag and entry instructions; renovation guidance can change the approach.
Day 3 — a measured DC finish. Use the time your departure really permits: a monument walk, a museum reservation or Georgetown. Include the trip back for luggage and the whole airport chain. Do not assume a late game and an early flight fit comfortably.
Nationals and Capitals home dates do not always coincide. Use this layout as an illustrative sequence and substitute the confirmed game on your dates.
Washington Commanders: a Maryland stadium day
Northwest Stadium is in Landover, Maryland—not Downtown DC. Plan the football day as its own branch of the trip. Morgan Boulevard and Downtown Largo are Metro approaches, but rail does not remove the remaining walk or guarantee an accessible gate-to-station chain.
Use official stadium transit guidance and parking guidance. Check the exact lot, pass, tailgate and pickup rules. Do not route today’s trip to a future stadium project.
Nationals Park and the riverfront
Navy Yard–Ballpark serves the Nationals Park area. Check the Nationals’ Metro guidance and current WMATA service rather than treating an old embedded last-train table as a promise.
Event parking passes and admission rules are specific to the venue and date. The nearby riverfront can support pregame time, but a ticket or parking pass for one stadium does not transfer to another.
Capital One Arena: Wizards and Capitals
Gallery Place is the Downtown arena’s key Metro connection. Check event-specific Know Before You Go for doors, permitted entrances and current renovation routing. General arena instructions do not override the event notice.
Build a return plan around the real end time, possible overtime, crowds and service availability; an event calendar’s listed end is not a guaranteed exit time.
College basketball
For Georgetown basketball, verify the venue on the specific ticket and official schedule; do not assume every team or event uses the same arena. George Washington’s Charles E. Smith Center is in Foggy Bottom at 600 22nd Street NW. Confirm each game’s current entry information.
Featured photographs may be historical and are identified in the credits; they are not current-roster claims.
More Washington sports: D.C. United and Washington Spirit
The six featured cards are not an exhaustive inventory of Washington sports. Audi Field also brings D.C. United and Washington Spirit games to the Southwest/Buzzard Point area.
Use Audi Field arrival guidance and the tenant’s own matchday notice. Gate directions, assistance and shuttle arrangements must be checked for the specific event; one team’s policy is not automatically another’s.
Choose a neighborhood and hotel base
Downtown / Penn Quarter: a practical base for an arena-focused trip and civic visits. Navy Yard / Capitol Riverfront: favors time around Nationals Park and the riverfront. Georgetown: choose for its streets and waterfront, with a separate transfer plan for the game. Capitol Hill: assess the actual property and station walk rather than relying on a neighborhood label.
An NFL-led trip may justify a Maryland base; a mixed DC weekend may favor a broader Metro-connected base. Compare the hardest late return, luggage arrangements, room accessibility and the property’s actual location before booking. No specific hotel availability, price or commercial offer is implied.
Metro and airport connections
Use WMATA for current service, last trains, elevators and planned works. Match Downtown, riverfront and Landover station choices to the event; the final walking connection still matters.
For Reagan National, use airport Metro guidance for terminal connections. For Dulles, allow the whole terminal-to-rail chain. BWI is a different rail-and-transfer decision, not a DC Metro stop. Confirm the airport’s current ground-transport instructions and your full departure timing.
Driving and event parking
Book the correct venue, date and lot—not just a nearby-looking map pin. Follow Nationals parking rules or the relevant venue’s official instructions. Nationals-affiliated lot rules do not permit tailgating. Northwest Stadium has separate lot and event conditions.
Parking, tailgating and accessible spaces are not guaranteed simply because you bought a game ticket.
Walking and accessibility
Allow for street crossings, crowds, weather, luggage and your party’s mobility needs. A transit-connected venue is not proof of a fully verified accessible journey. Check elevator status and arrange venue assistance in advance where needed.
Bikes and scooters
Use legal parking and current local operating guidance. Confirm event-specific bicycle valet availability and closing time with the venue; conflicting historical instructions are not a reliable promise of service.
Food, drinks and the postgame plan
Choose the area that supports your game and the return: Navy Yard for riverfront stadium time, Downtown for the arena, or a separate visit to The Wharf, Georgetown or U Street. The photographs show places and atmosphere, not endorsed restaurants or confirmed opening hours.
Check the venue’s own current hours and reservations before committing. A long detour after the game can jeopardize the last train; plan the trip home before adding another stop.
Monuments and museums around the game
Protect the game window first, then choose one civic block that fits your base. Outdoor memorial time and a reserved interior visit have different constraints. Check National Park Service visitor information and the museum’s own reservation requirements.
Leave buffers for security, weather, mobility, meals and the return to your game or luggage. A beautiful map route is not a verified timed itinerary.
