DENVER / WHERE TO STAY / SPORTS TRIP
Choose the base before you choose the hotel.
For most Denver sports trips, the useful question is not “Which hotel is closest?” It is “Which base makes the whole weekend easier?”
Choose your Denver base ↓THE CALL
Start with Union Station/LoDo for the strongest no-car chain. Use central Downtown when the broader city itinerary matters more. Move venue-proximate only when one event dominates the trip enough to justify the tradeoff.
Denver’s three major venue environments do not create one universal “stadium hotel” answer. Coors Field is tied closely to LoDo; Ball Arena sits on the downtown edge with rail access; Empower Field has its own event-day movement problem. Your room should support the trip you are actually taking.
BASE-CAMP SELECTOR / DECIDE FIRST
Three useful base postures
DEFAULT / NO-CAR
Union Station + LoDo
Best fit: airport arrival by A Line, Coors Field trips, multi-venue weekends and travelers who want the transit hub close.
Tradeoff: event-night room pricing and inventory can move quickly; verify the exact property and dates.
CITY + GAME
Central Downtown
Best fit: a broader Denver itinerary where the game is important but not the only reason for the trip.
Tradeoff: your exact walk/rail chain to each venue matters more than the neighborhood label.
SPECIAL CASE
Venue-proximate
Best fit: a one-event trip, tailgate-heavy football plan, mobility constraint or itinerary where minimizing one specific movement chain outweighs citywide flexibility.
Tradeoff: proximity to one venue can make the rest of the weekend harder.
ORIENT / DENVER BASE CONTEXT
Think in chains, not hotel pins.
Denver International Airport connects to Union Station on RTD’s A Line. From there, the useful sports-trip question becomes how your base connects to the venue you are actually visiting—and whether you need that same base to work for a second game, dinner, an early flight or a car-free weekend.
This is a base-choice framework, not a route map. Exact service, station access and event-day operations can change.

VENUE IMPLICATIONS / DO NOT OVERFIT
Let the event mix change the weight—not the underlying logic.
Coors Field
LoDo/Union Station deserves extra weight because the ballpark sits inside the downtown/LoDo trip environment. Do not turn that into a blanket rule for every Denver sports trip.
Ball Arena
A downtown or Union Station-oriented base can preserve flexibility while keeping rail/walk options in play. Recheck the event and current RTD service for your dates.
Empower Field
A football-first trip can justify giving venue movement, tailgating and postgame exit more weight. A broader Denver weekend may still favor a more flexible central base.
AIRPORT + NO-CAR CHAIN
Union Station is the hinge—not a promise that every trip is effortless.
RTD’s current rail system lists the A Line between Denver Airport and Union Station, and the September 27, 2026 service schedule is now in effect. That makes Union Station unusually useful in the base decision, but service alerts, maintenance and the final venue leg still need current verification.
HOTEL FILTER / AFTER THE BASE DECISION
Now make the property earn the booking.
MOVEMENT
Door-to-event chain
- Actual walk or station chain
- Postgame return
- Car or rideshare dependency
- Accessibility needs
ROOM ECONOMICS
Total trip cost
- Live rate for your dates
- Cancellation terms
- Parking cost if needed
- Room configuration
WHOLE WEEKEND
Everything after the game
- Second event or activity
- Airport/onward travel
- Food and nightlife priorities
- Early departure constraints
VERIFY FOR YOUR DATES
Neighborhood logic is durable. Hotel truth is not.
Before booking, recheck the property name/operator, live rate, cancellation terms, accessibility, parking, exact walking path and the transit or rideshare chain you expect to use. Event dates can change both room economics and movement conditions.
