MSP Airport to a Twin Cities Sports Trip
Solve the trip in this order: airport terminal → base → venue. MSP has direct Blue Line rail service at both terminals, so a car is not automatically required just because you flew in.
Step 1: know your terminal
MSP has Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 on separate roadways. Both have METRO Blue Line stations. Travel on light rail between the two airport terminals is free, and MSP says inter-terminal rail operates around the clock.
Step 2: move from the airport to the right base
Downtown Minneapolis
The Blue Line directly connects MSP Airport with downtown Minneapolis and Target Field. This is the simplest rail-first arrival when your hotel and primary games are centered on Minneapolis.
Downtown Saint Paul
Saint Paul requires a different chain. Metro Transit currently lists Route 54 between MSP and downtown Saint Paul, while the broader rail network connects Minneapolis and Saint Paul on the Green Line. Choose the chain that matches your arrival time, luggage and hotel location rather than assuming a single universal route.
Step 3: hand off from the base to the game
- U.S. Bank Stadium / Target Field / Target Center: a Minneapolis base generally keeps the venue leg short.
- Grand Casino Arena (formerly Xcel Energy Center): a Saint Paul base can eliminate the cross-city return after the event.
- Allianz Field: build the Midway/Green Line leg into the plan.
Airport facts worth checking on your travel day
Schedules, fares, construction and temporary service changes are volatile. MSP currently says the Blue Line serves both terminals; Metro Transit currently describes frequent airport service and the airport-to-downtown Minneapolis trip as under 30 minutes. Recheck the official trip planner for your actual arrival time instead of treating those operating details as a promise for every date.
