HOUSTON THINGS TO DO
More Than a Game.
A Bigger Weekend.
Museums, outdoor breaks and food stops—choose a Houston experience around the game, or give it a day of its own.

Choose the Outing That Fits Your Game
Houston can give your sports trip an art museum, a garden break, a food hall or a day devoted to spaceflight. Start with what your group actually wants to do, then work backward from the event you have booked. One worthwhile outing is a better plan than a list you have to abandon halfway through.
The selections below are editorial starting points, not timed routes. Check the attraction’s opening window and your journey to the venue before committing. If there is not enough room for both the visit and event entry, save the attraction for another day rather than borrowing time from the game.
Plan Your Houston Experience
Choose the game and the time you can genuinely spare. Keep the venue transfer and entry time outside your attraction visit.

Places to Compare
A deliberately short list for these selections. Try Half-Day or Separate Day to compare more of Houston.
No listed option matches these choices. Try another interest or time band; do not squeeze a longer outing into a pregame gap.

Discovery Green
1500 McKinney Street
A Downtown outdoor pause around your other plans. Check the actual program and weather.

McGovern Centennial Gardens
Hermann Park
Give the gardens their own daylight visit. Seasonal hours and holiday closures are separate from broader park access.

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Museum District
Choose a dedicated art visit. Check your intended building and day: the current Sarofim schedule is closed Monday and Tuesday.

Houston Museum of Natural Science
5555 Hermann Park Drive
Choose the Hermann Park location for this plan, not Sugar Land. Check current tickets, exhibitions and any separately ticketed experiences.

Buffalo Bayou Park
Water Works: 105-B Sabine Street
An outdoor break with trails and art. Check conditions; Cistern visits are separately booked. No guaranteed rental or admission is implied.

POST Houston
401 Franklin Street
A Downtown food-and-skyline stop with a food hall, exhibits and Skylawn. Check tenant and event hours. Parking is paid and limited; consult current access information.

Space Center Houston
1601 E NASA Parkway

Which Houston Experience Fits Your Trip?
Compare all seven choices here, including outings outside your current filter. These are interest-based recommendations; the cards above retain the official visit links and existing cautions.
Discovery Green
Choose it for a flexible Downtown outdoor pause: public art, lawn space and play give you something to enjoy without building the day around a museum visit.
Save it for another time when weather or an event limits the kind of break you want. Check the program rather than assuming a performance or activity will be available. Park attractions →
McGovern Centennial Gardens
Choose it for a garden-focused daylight visit through themed garden rooms, rather than an indoor exhibition or a broad park itinerary.
Check the gardens’ own seasonal entry hours, not just Hermann Park access. Groups of 15 or more need an advance reservation; a small family is not automatically subject to that group rule. Garden visit details →
Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Choose MFAH when your group wants visual art and time to focus on a few galleries.
Prefer HMNS if science and natural history are the stronger interests. Use the campus and ticket guidance below to narrow the visit. MFAH visit details →
Houston Museum of Natural Science
Choose HMNS when science and natural history are the draw, rather than an art-gallery visit.
Prefer MFAH for visual art. If only one HMNS experience matters to your group, make that the starting point for your ticket choice below. HMNS ticket guidance →
Buffalo Bayou Park
Choose it for trails, public art and a larger outdoor landscape. Select a defined section rather than treating the Water Works address as the whole park.
A smaller outing may suit low energy or difficult weather better. The separately reserved Cistern is dark and does not admit children under nine; it is not an automatic addition for every group. Cistern conditions →
POST Houston
Choose it when food is the main attraction and skyline time would be a welcome extra. The food hall and outdoor Skylawn offer different parts of the visit.
Choose another plan if you need guaranteed quick service or an entirely indoor skyline experience. Tenant hours, rooftop access and event arrangements need their own checks. POST visit details →
Space Center Houston
Choose it for a dedicated spaceflight-interest outing with room to prioritize the exhibits and any tour you want to experience.
Keep it separate from game day in this guide. Admission, tram arrangements and both directions of travel need to work together; an unverified return is not a pregame plan. Space Center visitor information →
Weekend Itinerary Ideas
Short Pregame

Historical photograph: Daderot, October 21, 2012. CC0 Display cropped. Not a current exhibit or access guarantee.
The plan
- Check the actual travel and event-entry plan.
- Choose one flexible outdoor or food stop.
- Skip the attraction if timing is tight.
Why this plan works
Begin with your actual venue-entry plan, then choose one flexible option from the current selections. Leave out a second neighborhood so you can enjoy the stop without racing through a checklist. Finish sightseeing when your checked game journey needs to begin; for Texans trips, do not treat a Downtown stop as a stadium-area transfer.
Half-Day

Historical photograph: WhisperToMe, October 22, 2020. CC0 Display cropped. Not a current exhibit or access guarantee.
The plan
- Choose one museum or outdoor area, then a meal.
- Confirm the opening day.
- Leave a separate buffer for your ticketed event.
Why this plan works
Choose art, science or one outdoor area—not a compulsory circuit through both museums and the gardens. Add a meal only if the remaining time supports it. Nearby places still require a usable entrance-to-entrance journey, and the attraction visit ends before your event approach begins.
Separate Day

Historical photograph: Pi3.124, October 1, 2016. CC BY-SA 4.0 Display cropped; adapted image retains ShareAlike license. Not a current exhibit or access guarantee.
The plan
- Protect a full day for Space Center Houston or a longer museum visit.
- Arrange admissions and any tour separately.
- Do not count on a quick pregame return.
Why this plan works
Use a day without the game to protect your main experience rather than pack in every option. For Space Center, settle the admission and desired tour together, then plan the outward and return journey for that actual date. A Saturday trip needs a Saturday return, not an assumption based on weekday service.
Museum Campuses & Tickets

Historical photograph: WhisperToMe, January 26, 2021. CC0 Display cropped. Not a current exhibit or access guarantee.
At MFAH, make a short list of galleries or exhibitions before choosing your entrance. The main Sarofim campus spans several gallery buildings; the house museums are separate locations. A focused campus visit is a different plan from adding a house museum elsewhere. Check the MFAH campus and tickets.
At HMNS, start with the experience that makes the visit worthwhile for you. Check whether it belongs to permanent exhibition admission or needs a separate timed ticket, then confirm availability. That decision is more useful than buying a general ticket and assuming it covers the whole wish list. Check HMNS admissions and visit questions.
POST Houston: Food Hall vs. Rooftop
Treat the meal and the view as two decisions. The food hall offers multiple dining choices; Skylawn is outdoors, so weather and rooftop arrangements can change what the visit delivers. A food stop can still be worthwhile without making the roof essential to the plan.
Check the tenant you intend to use as well as the building or event schedule. POST describes rooftop elevator access on the north side; confirm current access and any temporary closures if that feature matters to your visit. Review POST’s current visit and access information.
Space Center Houston: Why We Recommend a Separate Day

Historical photograph: Pi3.124, October 1, 2016. CC BY-SA 4.0 Display cropped; adapted image retains ShareAlike license. Not a current exhibit or access guarantee.
A shorter visit is possible: the operator publishes a two-hour self-guided suggestion alongside longer on-site itineraries. That is time at the attraction, not a complete journey from Houston, and it does not guarantee that every desired experience will fit. Our separate-day recommendation protects the game plan; it is not a claim that every Space Center visit must last a full day. Compare the operator’s suggested visits.
General admission and tram access are separate planning questions. Historic Mission Control requires a paid advance add-on; other tram experiences have their own boarding arrangements and depend on capacity, weather and NASA operations. Choose your priorities before booking, and confirm the current rules rather than assuming admission guarantees a particular tour. Read the current tram arrangements.
Plan both directions of travel for your actual date, including a return fallback. Without that checked journey, especially for a car-free trip, do not attach Space Center to a pregame gap or assume a quick return. Use Houston arrival planning as a starting point, not a confirmed attraction transfer.
Weather, Energy & Individual Access Needs
Weather
Heat, rain or low energy may favor one checked indoor visit over an ambitious outdoor circuit. For an outdoor choice, check the forecast and current park conditions before setting out.
Energy & pace
An indoor museum is not automatically open, quiet or effortless: consider walking, standing, crowds and the particular exhibits you want.
Individual access
Use each operator’s access information to ask about your intended entrance, galleries or tour, mobility equipment and any sensory needs. Published features are not proof of a complete accessible journey there and back. MFAH access information and Space Center accessibility options can help you identify the right questions; confirm availability for your visit.
