Houston Airport Transportation: IAH, Hobby and Your Game Weekend

A good Houston arrival leaves you time to enjoy the city before the game: dinner around Downtown, a stop at Discovery Green, or a relaxed check-in before heading out in your team’s colors. Choose your flight, hotel and airport transfer together. A cheaper flight loses some of its appeal if it adds an awkward connection, expensive parking or a rushed trip to the stadium.

Houston’s two main passenger airports are George Bush Intercontinental (IAH), north of Downtown, and William P. Hobby (HOU), southeast of it. Both have METRO bus service. Neither has a METRORail connection at the terminal.

IAH or Hobby: which fits your weekend?

Hobby is closer to Downtown, but the best airport is the one that fits your flight and whole weekend. For a Downtown-centered Astros or Rockets trip, compare both airports against your actual flight schedule and hotel. Hobby’s location may make the ground journey attractive, but a convenient IAH nonstop or an earlier arrival can be the better overall choice. For a Texans weekend, your decision also depends on whether you want a stadium/Medical Center base or a Downtown stay with a separate journey to the game.

Hobby location · IAH location

Start with three questions:

  • What does the flight give you? Compare arrival time, nonstop options, baggage charges and the return, not just the advertised fare. Confirm IAH or HOU on the booking.
  • Where will you spend the weekend? A Downtown sports trip and a stay near the stadium are different plans. Adding Clear Lake, Alvin or other farther-out stops changes the transport calculation again.
  • Who and what are traveling with you? A solo fan with a carry-on has different priorities from four friends with checked bags or a family needing child restraints.

Arriving at Bush Intercontinental (IAH)

For a Downtown base: METRO’s 500 Downtown Direct costs $4.50 one way at the regular fare. Board at Terminal E, Level 2, outside Door E201, between signs 6A and 6B. The June 2026 timetable currently linked by METRO gives scheduled IAH-to-George R. Brown North Transit Center journeys of about 30–40 minutes, depending on the day and departure. That is time on the bus, before adding baggage collection, terminal movement, waiting or the final hotel leg.

For a lower-fare local option: route 102 costs $1.25 and uses Terminal C, outside C105. Houston Airports estimates 50–90 minutes to Downtown. Compare the complete journey to your hotel rather than assuming the lower fare makes it the better arrival.

The two buses use different terminals. Older route-500 references to Terminal C are superseded by METRO’s move to Terminal E. Check your arrival terminal and airport signs before setting off for the stop. IAH bus locations and fares · IAH local-bus time estimate

Arriving at Hobby (HOU)

For Downtown: the 500 also costs $4.50 one way. METRO buses use Hobby Transit Center, just north of the baggage-claim exit doors; Houston Airports identifies the bus area as Level 1, Curb Zone 3. The same June 2026 timetable gives scheduled journeys of roughly 25–29 minutes to St. Joseph/Main and 36–44 minutes to the George R. Brown North Transit Center. Choose the stop that fits your hotel or onward connection.

Hobby also has local routes 40, 50, 73 and 88, with a $1.25 regular fare. Their destinations differ; do not assume every local bus goes directly Downtown. Use your hotel’s actual address when comparing them. Hobby bus options and connections · Airport bus pickup area

Choose a ride for your people, bags and plans

Bus: a useful choice when its stop and operating hours fit your hotel and you are comfortable managing your luggage. At the regular 500 fare, two travelers pay $9 one way and four pay $18, before any additional costs. These are fare examples, not complete-trip quotes.

Taxi or ride app: compare a current price for a vehicle that holds your whole party and luggage. A direct hotel arrival may be worth the extra cost, particularly with several bags or a late landing. Prices and traffic vary, so an undated “typical Uber fare” is not a booking quote. At Hobby, taxis use Zone 2 and ride apps Zone 5. At IAH, pickup depends on terminal and service; the Terminal E ride-app area is on Level 2, Zone 5, while its taxi pickup is at E103 on the arrivals/baggage-claim level. Follow the correct service’s signs. IAH taxi and ride-app instructions · Hobby taxi and ride-app instructions

Rental car: compare the whole weekend. Add hotel parking, event parking, fuel and tolls to the rental total, and allow for pickup and return. A car can be useful for a spread-out itinerary. For a Downtown-focused stay, weigh those costs against the airport rides and local trips you actually expect to take.

Paying for METRO: cash on buses does not include free transfers or change. RideMETRO fare cards/app, supported bank cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay include transfers to equal- or lower-fare services for up to three hours. Use the same payment method each time; a physical card and its phone-wallet version count separately, and each traveler needs an individual payment method. Local Day Pass and 3-Hour Pass tickets do not cover the 500 service. Current fares and payment rules

From the airport to the right game

The Downtown bus gets you into the city; the next leg depends on your venue. These are transit connections to compare, not verified end-to-end itineraries. Check the route from your arrival terminal to the bus, the connection to your hotel and the walk from the station to your permitted entrance, including any accessibility needs.

  • Astros at Daikin Park: METRO identifies Convention District on the Green and Purple Lines for ballpark access. A ballpark-side hotel can keep the baseball part of the weekend centered Downtown. The Westin Houston Downtown, for example, officially describes its location as across from the park. Check the actual hotel entrance and your ticketed gate before deciding on a walk. METRO’s Daikin Park guide
  • Rockets at Toyota Center: METRO lists Bell on the Red Line and Convention District on the Green/Purple Lines. A convention-area base can pair the game with Downtown dining and Discovery Green. Hilton Americas identifies Toyota Center and the park as adjacent, but hotel location does not establish access through an arena bridge or a particular screening entrance. METRO’s Toyota Center guide
  • Texans at Reliant Stadium, formerly NRG Stadium: take the Red Line to Stadium Park/Astrodome; from Downtown, ride southbound. A Downtown stay gives you a city-centered weekend with a separate stadium journey; a stadium/Medical Center base changes that balance. From either airport, reaching Reliant Stadium by transit requires an onward connection. Check the event’s entry and return arrangements. METRO’s Reliant Park guide
  • Dynamo or Dash at Shell Energy Stadium: the Green and Purple Lines serve EaDo/Stadium. Plan the return as carefully as the outward trip, especially after an evening match. METRO’s Shell Energy Stadium guide

Let your hotel unlock the weekend

Choose the base before adding extra stops. A Downtown stay can connect baseball or basketball with a meal and time at Discovery Green; a Texans-focused stay may favor a different balance of stadium access and off-game exploring. Compare the Houston hotel areas and properties, then use the dining guide and things to do to build around that location. For a Downtown break, start with Discovery Green before a ballgame.

If you land before check-in, confirm the hotel’s bag-storage policy. Do not assume a stadium will accept your suitcase, a room will be ready early, or a hotel shuttle serves the airport just because it offers local transportation. Westin location · Hilton Americas location

Plan the flight home before the final whistle

The June 2026 timetable currently linked by METRO lists departures from both airports toward Downtown from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., every 30 minutes daily. Return departures from Downtown are different: check your specific stop, direction and date. An evening game can outlast the airport-bus option, so arrange an alternative before relying on it.

Returning through IAH Terminal B North: Houston Airports currently directs travelers to check in and clear security at the Terminal C departures lobby, then access the B North gates from there while the B lobby remains in a later construction phase. Check your airline’s instructions and current IAH alerts before choosing an airport drop-off.

Work backward from your airline’s check-in and bag cutoff. Include the game ending late, getting out of the venue, collecting bags from the hotel, the airport transfer and security. If renting, add the car return and terminal transfer. Leave room to enjoy the game rather than treating its scheduled start as a guarantee of when you can leave.
