The Buffalo Planning Guide
Choose your Buffalo game
The Bills play in Orchard Park; the Sabres play downtown. Buffalo Bulls football is on UB’s North Campus in Amherst. Those are three distinct destinations. Choose the actual fixture before deciding where to stay or whether another game fits.
Buffalo Bills · the new Highmark Stadium
Highmark Stadium opened in 2026 across the street from its predecessor. Build the day around the current stadium’s parking and entry information. An old saved map or photograph can describe the wrong venue. Do not assume drive-up stadium parking is available.
Buffalo Sabres · KeyBank Center
Make downtown Buffalo the focus of a hockey night. Allow time for dinner, screening and entry, then check the trip back. The arena’s visitor guide covers tickets, parking, accessibility and current policies. Visitors coming from Canada should leave extra time for the border crossing.
Buffalo Bulls · Broadview Stadium, Amherst
Broadview Stadium, formerly UB Stadium, is on UB’s North Campus in Amherst. Treat a college game as a separate destination from downtown and Orchard Park. Check the fixture and campus arrival guidance before planning an extra sports stop.
Put your Buffalo weekend together
Start with one confirmed game. Favor downtown for a Sabres-and-city trip or the Southtowns for a football-first driving plan. Check the return before adding food and attractions. Combine Bills and Sabres only when the actual start times and transfers work; no doubleheader is promised.
A flexible three-day Buffalo weekend
Arrive and settle into the base that suits your event. Use the first evening for a local meal. Keep the game day focused on the venue and its return. Save a separate window for the AKG or waterfront, adapting to opening days, weather and your departure. Rearrange the sequence around your actual ticket.
Compare Buffalo stay bases
These are editorial geographic comparisons, not inspected hotel recommendations. Check the exact property address, parking, accessibility, cancellation terms and availability. A downtown address does not make Orchard Park walkable, and a Southtowns hotel does not guarantee a walk to the stadium.
Downtown / Canalside · hockey and city time
Favor downtown when KeyBank Center, waterfront time and city dining shape the weekend. Tradeoff: a Bills game still requires a separate Orchard Park transfer. Compare hotel parking and the actual route back after an event; rates and availability vary.
Orchard Park / Southtowns · football first
Favor this side of the region when football leads the trip and you have a clear driving plan. Tradeoff: a downtown evening becomes a separate transfer. Verify the individual hotel and approach; do not treat the Southtowns as one walkable stadium district.
Amherst · an alternative for a Bulls-first visit
Compare Amherst when UB North Campus is the main event. Downtown Buffalo and Orchard Park remain separate journeys. Judge the whole weekend rather than choosing solely by proximity to a college fixture.
Downtown rail · check current service work
Use NFTA’s current schedule and alerts. As checked October 29, 2026, November 1 changes include single-tracking and DL&W closure, with trains terminating at Canalside during that work. Recheck accessible boarding arrangements and the last return for your date. Older waterfront pages still use the Erie Canal Harbor station name.
Driving to a Bills game
Bills lots require lot-specific advance parking permits, with separate accessible-parking rules. Read the current stadium entry and exit maps, including Abbott Road restrictions. Old-stadium maps are not a substitute for the replacement venue’s instructions. Check the actual event before leaving.
Football without driving · Game Day Express
NFTA Game Day Express is limited event service from designated stops, not a guarantee that any downtown bus reaches the stadium. Check the actual game’s published departures, boarding point and return instructions. A downtown stay can work without a car only when the whole journey is confirmed.
Airport arrivals
Buffalo Niagara International Airport lists Route 24 Genesee bus service. Check the current timetable against your flight, bags and hotel; compare it with the airport’s other ground-transportation choices. No fixed fare, availability or transfer time is promised here.
Walking, accessibility and winter plans
Check the final approach, crossings and your mobility needs directly with the venue and transport operator. A photograph is not a navigation map. Leave flexibility for the forecast and service alerts: outdoor football, waterfront outings and indoor hockey call for different plans.
NFTA accessibility and service alerts · KeyBank Center visitor information · Bills parking and accessibility
Beyond the game · Canalside and Buffalo AKG
Fit a waterfront walk into the day when the weather suits it. Canalside’s rentals, ferry and programming have their own seasons. Give the AKG a separate visit window and check its opening days, tickets and special notices before committing the rest of the day.
Food and drink · choose the right side of the region
Use Visit Buffalo’s food trail to choose a stop near the rest of your plans. Wings, beef on weck, Buffalo-style pizza and sponge candy offer plenty of range. Check the actual kitchen’s current hours and leave a buffer before the game. No restaurant availability or firsthand dining experience is claimed.
Make time for wings
Choose a wing stop in the part of the region you are already visiting. A famous name across the county can turn a relaxed meal into another transfer. The historical food photograph illustrates the dish, not a current menu, endorsement or available table.
Try beef on weck
Buffalo’s roast-beef sandwich on a seasoned kummelweck roll makes a different food stop from wings. Use the regional food trail to find a location that fits your day, then verify the business’s current hours. The photograph is a historical food example, not a current restaurant recommendation.
Before you book or leave
Confirm the fixture, current venue, tickets, parking or event bus, last return, accessible approach, weather and attraction hours. Research basis: October 29, 2026. Schedules and service work can change. No fares, travel-time guarantees, inspected hotel endorsements or firsthand visit claims are made.
